Three Trees 2007-2010

While maintaining my studio practice in the west village (2000-2011) I watched the Hudson River Park take shape, including the planting of Zelkova trees at the end of my block, they became a constant source of inspiration. I love how their leaves soften the linear landcape and frame the views. Sitting under their canopy feels akin to a shelter, like an interior but outside.

This series was painted at the start of the MillionTreesNYC initiative to grow New York City’s urban forest. For me these trees represent the beginning of what seemed a re-greening effort in NYC and in cities at large.
